About North Van Arts

Our mandate is to enable emerging and professional artists in all disciplines, bridge cultures and build strong & healthy communities through the arts.

Plan Your Visit

With safety measures in place, North Van Arts welcomes visitors to CityScape Community ArtSpace. We continue to follow guidance from the Province of British Columbia and WorksafeBC to ensure your visit is a positive and healthy one.

Admission

It is free to visit CityScape Community ArtSpace. The City of North Vancouver owns the space, and North Van Arts programmes the gallery through public exhibition proposals.

All exhibitions are group based and themed, to inspire reflection and conversation. This creative approach continually results in truly unique, thought-provoking, and diverse art exhibitions, showcasing local and international artists. The high ceilings and open concept allow for dynamic installations, sculptures, 3 dimensional work, paintings, projections, textiles and more.  North Van Arts programmes 8 exhibitions annually.

Donations are always welcome.

Accessibility

Mobility:

Entrance: Enter by double doors (each 3′ wide; 6′ when both doors are open). Left door opens by automatic door opener button located to left of doors facing the gallery. Doors stay open for 15 seconds, and can be held open indefinitely with a button located inside. Please call staff at 604-988-6844 and we will be available to immediately open the door(s) for visitors.

Entrance walkway: There is a wheelchair + mobility device accessible ramp leading to the gallery space immediately after the entrance. This ramp is 20′ long, 4′ wide, built into the concrete floor, with a handrail along both sides for the full length.

Washrooms: Behind the volunteer’s desk is a gender-neutral washroom, which has a door 3′ wide that is not automatic.

Exhibition Space: Depending on the exhibition you may see sculptural work or installations throughout the gallery on the floor, but our exhibitions manager strives to always clear a 4′ 2″ path for mobility device users to more easily enjoy artwork on display. There are two ‘rooms’ (spaces) in CityScape Community ArtSpace divided by one large wall fixture which has 5′ of space on either side which will always remain clear and unobstructed for fire safety and accessibility concerns.

Seating: There are two gallery benches that are 4′ 5″ wide, 4′ 2″ long and 1′ 6″ high, with no back or hand rails. If the exhibition involves sculptures, these are sometimes relocated to the back hallway adjacent to the gallery, and open to visitors.

Sensory:

North Van Arts staff and volunteer teams aim to be scent-sensitive by reducing and eliminating perfumes or strongly scented products. Please avoid wearing strong scents such as deodorants, colognes, and perfumes (especially Axe) inside CityScape and North Van Arts.

Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that exhibition artwork and/or materials will be scent-free, depending on the works in each show. We will aim to include a note on the exhibition webpage if scents are included as part of the exhibition.

CityScape Community Artspace has four windows in the front entrance, including one large, multi-pane window. The office has one three-pane window in the back. The gallery space is lit with LED track lighting, which is adjusted according to each exhibit. The office spaces are lit with LED lighting, with at least two lights in each office space. You may request that our staff dim the lights in the gallery during your visit. The lighting on the Art Rental panels at the rear of our office space can also be controlled using a remote, with the help of staff.

There is an internal sound system which does not regularly produce sound for exhibitions, unless there is an installation or event-based use, such as background music for opening receptions or broadcasting microphones of public speakers. Free earplugs are available at North Van Arts front desk, and you can ask staff to pause music during your visit if it is connected to our soundsystem and not an integral part of the exhibition.

Service Animals:

Dogs and pets are not allowed inside, but service animals are welcome. With your consent we will remind visitors not to touch or pet service animals that are working in our space during events and/or during your visit to North Van Arts.

We look forward to your visits!
