Garden 1 – Organic

Gardener: Sally McDermott
4486 Piccadilly North, West Vancouver

An old West Vancouver garden built in the ’50’s with steps artfully leading down the granite rock into the garden. The garden continues across two streams through the woods, under the old growth Douglas-fir, passing many native plants, shrubs and perennial garden beds.

I am a mixed media artist based in Vancouver. My art is rooted in my life on the west coast of British Columbia, but also draws on my travelling experiences. Drawing on my background in environmental science, I create evocative and purposely imperfect paintings inspired by nature's patinas, seascapes and the colours of dusk.

"I am a sculptor working with natural and found materials. My practice has evolved over time from figurative to a more abstract approach to shape and form. I find inspiration in the fantastic and complex structures that abound in the natural world. Working in concrete, wood, willow and clay, I look to arrive at the essence of form, whether it is constructing water worlds in a fountain, or lightly manipulating a found piece of sculptural driftwood. Process is an integral part of my practice, and searching for natural sculpture has as much relevance and focus as carving with a hook knife or casting a modeled form into a permanent structure. "

" My artistic practice centres around an exploration of the natural world, with an emphasis on preservation, and appreciation of the intrinsic value of wilderness, in and for itself, and for the human part of the ecosphere. I am an avid hiker, and spend a great deal of time exploring the trails and byways of this beautiful, mountainous land. Time in the forest, in the mountains, is time well spent indeed. It is there where the limits of one small life fades before the immensity of the forces of geology and the movements of the vast web of interconnectivity. In my paintings, I tell the stories of this land as seen through my eyes and felt through my footsteps along the trail."
