Garden 3 – Vibrant

Gardener: Nikola Girke
2304 Ottawa Avenue, West Vancouver

“In 2019, my husband and I re-landscaped our yard, which took just over 8 months to build, without machines, just the two of us doing some really brutal hard work. The yard was unusable: it was too sloped, and had a dangerous rocky path and a retaining wall that was falling away – all that were built in 1939. We wanted to keep the character of our house, while paying tribute to this most amazing property – building different tiers to make the most use of our space. Our space is truly built and maintained through a labour of love. We have greenery and flowers surrounding our home – all year round, which keeps the bees and the hummingbirds very happy – as well as the occasional monarch butterfly. We love to spend most of our time outside ‘working’ in our yard or enjoying morning coffee  or watching the sunset on the deck level. South facing, we feel we have our own little micro-climate, our garden tends to be warmer than others, and it has a view that one never gets tired of.”

Accessibility

This garden is on three levels. The first level is a grassy area that can be accessed through a flat surface, and offers a view of the whole garden. However, to explore the art on all the levels, one has to use a few steep stairs without a railing. Street parking is available, although the parking places closest to the garden are on a steep hill. You will find the entrance to the garden on 23rd Street, a few steps down the hill from Ottawa Avenue.

Violet was born and raised in Edmonton and moved to Vancouver to pursue a career as a graphic designer. In 1988, she graduated with honours from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design and worked as a professional graphic designer for more than 30 years. A need for a new creative outlet and a change in direction led her to kiln-formed glass. Violet began working with glass in 2008 under the mentorship of Brock Craig at Craig Studios. Her work can be found in galleries/shops across Canada. She works out of her home studio in Burnaby, BC. Violet’s kiln-formed glass is clean and contemporary. Her attention to detail and finish and love of colour, pattern and texture reveal themselves in distinctly unique, functional and sculptural pieces, equally elegant for the home, garden and body. Her work is highly influenced by her graphic design sensibility and her love of gardening and desire to create unique glass pieces for her own garden has led her to developing a diverse selection of sculptural items, sure to stand out in any garden.

Dana Huhn started making art at a young age. She has a background in art history, graphic design, business administration, and ten years in the architecture field. Shortly before covid she began painting regularly and now she has made it her main focus. She is based on the North Shore where she works and lives with her family. Dana spends a lot of time experimenting with different mediums and techniques. She currently has two bodies of work. One collection incorporates photography and alcohol ink painting. Her photographs are often taken around West and North Vancouver and Vancouver Island, taking inspiration from forests, trees and the Pacific ocean. Pairing the photograph with her painting is a process she really enjoys and for her, it celebrates the natural beauty around her. Her other focus is colourful semi-abstract/abstract painting. This work is often a playful exchange between vibrant colours and bold (sometimes whimsical) patterns and marks.
