North Van Arts Garden 7

Garden 7 – Calm

Gardener: North Shore Hospice
319 East 14th Street, North Vancouver

The hospice garden has a variety of pathways and seating areas amidst a wide variety of perennials and annuals all indigenous to the North Shore. The hospice garden is stewarded by a volunteer group of Master Gardeners from Van Dusen who attend the garden 2/monthly from March to October. We have various seating areas, umbrella tables and a newly installed weather awning which rolls out over the patio. We also have indoor access to a large activity room where vendors are welcome to sit if there is rain.

Accessibility

Street parking is available on East 13th Street, which offers 2 hour free parking. There is also access to a large gravel lot for event parking. There is a bus stop at 15th and St. Georges avenue where passengers can disembark and head one block east to the hospice. The garden is flat, with wide paved pathways.

Kaie Fu is a ceramic artist. She was born on Hainan Island in Southern China. In 2002, she came to Jingdezhen and began to learn traditional ceramic techniques from Huang Fei. In 2020, she moved to North Vancouver, BC, Canada. In 2022, she began to learn hand-building and sculpture with her mentor Louisa Leibmen at the Pottery Studio at the Delbrook Community Center. She loves nature, especially the local hummingbirds. As a potter, she likes to drink from ceramic cups. She thinks hummingbirds also prefer ceramics to plastic.Kaie started to experiment and create a series of small sculptures that combine wheel-throwing, hand-building, carving and painting techniques together. She designed ceramic nectar cups for hummingbirds (a unique kind of hummingbird bird feeder). When she used a syringe to clean and inject sugar water in and hang it on a branch, a hummingbird was quickly attracted to drink the sugar water. She feels a great privilege and wants to show her gratitude to nature by eliminating plastic and using ceramic cups.
