Building on the success of our Intro to Figure Drawing course, we’re also offering the next stage in your drawing experience.
About
What’s in a face? The human face is a window through which we view the world and view each other. It is a symbol of our species and our personal identity. It changes every day and evolves as we age, yet it remains essentially the same. Many people view portraits as the ultimate test of drawing ability, which explains why it seems unachievable for so many. In this course, we will cover some basic foundational lessons in deconstructing and creating portraits in graphite. In the final lesson, students will produce an original portrait of a friend or relative based on a supplied photo.
What to Expect:
- Drawing Techniques: We cover the basic foundations of observing shapes and objects in the world and translating that onto paper.
- Materials: We will use a range of dry media to create lines, shapes, texture, and shadow on paper.
- Anatomy: We will analyse how the head and facial features can be simplified into basic 3-dimensial shapes.
- Teaching Material: References will be provided via Dropbox and Youtube links
Skills Learned:
- Seeing: At least half of the drawing process comes from being able to examine and understand visual relationships in from of you.
- Drawing: We will learn how to transfer our understanding of visual relationships from the brain to a 2-dimensional surface.
Why Attend:
- Perfect for beginner and intermediate artists seeking to learn portrait drawing. Previous drawing experience is useful but not essential.
Who Should Attend:
- Anyone who is captivated by the human face!
This class is designed to complement our Life Drawing classes at Maplewood House, providing a foundational understanding of figure drawing for those interested in exploring the human form in greater detail.
