Join master weaver Jessica Silvey and learn the fundamental techniques of the checker board (plait) and twine methods of cedar bark weaving using locally harvested red cedar bark. This two-day workshop requires attendance on both days to complete a larger weaving project. Choose to weave a traditional cedar bark hat (pictured below) or choose to create a fedora or panama-style hat. All materials are included. Class finishes at 3pm on May 25, and 4pm on May 26.
I am a self taught weaver of Coast Salish and Portuguese descent, of the Silvey family of Egmont, BC. Many of my childhood hours were spent with my paternal Grandmother in the forest. It is my favourite place to be, surrounded by cedar trees and silence. I have learned traditional techniques from research as well as trial and error. I harvest and prepare my own materials. When I am ready to weave, the most time consuming work has been completed. It is my passion as well as therapy for my soul. – Jessica Silvey
