Build your own unique city or town using prints created with a gel plate.
This technique produces rich and diverse papers with stunning textures and colors, which will be cut and used for collage on paper.

We’ll start on the first evening by applying acrylic paint onto a handmade gel plate with brayers. Then, we’ll print onto cardstock using a wide variety of stencils, masks, rollers, and mark-making tools, resulting in exciting and highly textured prints.

After letting the prints dry overnight, the papers will be cut into basic pieces for walls, windows, chimneys, and roofs. Construction will begin, involving the exploration of background and foreground, value, line, and shape while designing the collage. Once the design is finalized, the landscape will be adhered with a medium, and details can be added with markers, additional paint, or colored pencils.

You can expect your finished piece to be approximately 10” x 14”, and there will be plenty of leftover pieces for future collages at home.

Students are encouraged to bring inspirational photos or sketches, whether from your trip to Venice, your old homestead, or the Vancouver skyline. Your interpretation will be perfect!

In addition, we will provide additional resources, including books and online content, along with a comprehensive handout.

  1. Create unique cityscapes or townscapes using gel plate prints and explore various construction techniques.
  2. Develop an understanding of acrylic paint application on a gel plate and the use of brayers to achieve textured prints.
  3. Utilize stencils, masks, rollers, and mark-making tools to enhance your print creations.
  4. Learn how to plan and design collages with a focus on background, foreground, value, line, and shape.
  5. Enhance your collage with additional details using markers, paint, or colored pencils, resulting in a finished artwork of approximately 10” x 14”.
