Urban Sketching (Online)

Ready to slow down and sketch the world rushing past you. 

In Clement Yeh’s Online Urban Sketching course, students will find opportunities to slow down and notice the urban environment through their daily commutes. Whether you’re in  a busy city, the suburbs, or a small town, this class is designed to have you stop to “smell” the concrete, glass, and steel roses.

What to Expect:
  • A mix of online instruction, including video demonstrations of the instructor sketching in urban environments, and weekly homework assignments where you’ll be asked to sketch outdoors in your own city.  As an online class, we can’t facilitate live urban sketching during class time.
  • Group discussions, demos, and feedback
  • Mindfulness-based observation techniques to enhance artistic focus
  • Opportunities to share your sketchbook progress and inspiration
Skills Learned:
  • Understanding and applying 1-, 2-, and 3-point perspective
  • Foundations for sketching architectural elements and street scenes
  • Using line, shadow, and wash to create depth and mood
  • Developing a personal visual style in an urban sketchbook
  • Practicing mindfulness and observation through drawing

  • Sketchbook or scrapbook enthusiasts seeking new techniques and inspiration
What You Need to Bring:
  • A sketchbook (recommended size: 8”x10” or larger)
  • watercolor paper pad, 8″ x 10″, 200 GSM (90 lb or higher) 
  • 12″ ruler
  • Plastic set square (triangle) for drafting (alternative: cut out large cereal box front, cut to 90° on each corner, ruler straight edges) 
  • Graphite pencils (2B, 4B)
  • Waterproof fine liner pens (05, 08, 12, Micron, Uniball)
  • A small set of india ink or watercolour
  • India ink or watercolours (working in colour is optional) *Disclaimer: India ink will ruin clothes if spilled! Be mindful and dress appropriately. 
  • Small plastic palette or foam egg container
  • Glass jar for water (plastic container if painting on site)
  • 5 – 10 misc size acrylic or watercolour brushes, small and large, flat and round
  • Paper towels or absorbent rag
  • Access to printer for printing 8.5 x 11 reference images
  • Eraser and sharpener
  • A portable folding stool or cushion (optional, for on-site sketching)
  • Weather-appropriate clothing for outdoor sessions
  • Toolbox (optional)
