19th Birthday Party | CityScape Community Art Space
February 9 - March 11
Cityscape Community Art Space
Opening Reception Thursday, Feb 8 | 7 - 9 pm

NVCAC has partnered with Housing Matters Media Project to bring the 19th Birthday Party to the North Shore. This media art installation was produced to explore issues relating to youth transitioning out of government care at age 19 and youth homelessness. We invite you to sit down and hear the stories about the challenges youth in care face as they transition to adulthood.

The Housing Matters Media Project understands creative practice is central to the development of engaged communities and to awakening our collective potential to make meaning and create change. This project was founded by community engaged artists Patti Fraser and Corin Browne to respond to the impact of the housing crisis on youth. The Housing Matters Media project is currently using socially engaged art practices to address the concerns of young people who experience government care through the creation of new narratives and forms of expression.

The story continues through Portraits of Connection and the We Are Everywhere book.

We have also partnered with Handsworth Secondary, and students in Grades 8 – 10 have created original birthday cards through, mono printing, paper cutting and photoshop. We will display the originals in the gallery and have prints available for the public to write well wishes to youth in the foster care system. The students were able to watch a few of the videos in the installation for inspiration on the images to use on the cover.
