Things we found at the lake is a series that twists the traditional summer pastime of swimming at the lake with folklore and fantasy. Mundane activity at the lake is juxtaposed with Hughes own cultural heritage, traditions and mythology; the Hobby Horse from British folklore, the Morris dance or Herne the Hunter with a stag’s head. Hughes also re-imagines the lake with archetypal Canadian wildlife by including beavers, loons and Canadian geese in the lakes.
A string of dualities runs through the work:
Reality/Fantasy | Mundane/Mythological | Beauty/Ugliness | Canadian/British | Safe/Sinister
