Kris Noble: Faceted Florals
August 5 – September 20, 2021
District Library Gallery

Faceted Florals allude to the impermanence of our vision and that sparkling movement of pattern and color that occurs with the blink of an eye, the passing of a cloud, or the breath of a breeze.” Artist Statement

Following an established career as a textile stylist and craftsperson, Kris Noble’s artistic direction changed in 2007 when she volunteered for a mural painting project.  The resultant panels, featuring expansive garden scenes, now hang in the Dementia Care Unit of the Capilano Care Centre in West Vancouver, BC. From then on her painting continued to focus on the world of flowers, albeit on a smaller scale.

It was Noble’s love of textiles and memories of a childhood puzzle that catapulted her into painting Faceted Florals. The puzzle was a European toy consisting of wooden geometric shapes and sheets of suggested quilt block layouts, and playing with it was the beginning of a lifelong love affair with pattern and colour.

She starts with a photo reference of a flower and from there creates additional copies, each with a different colour balance. The copies are treated as separate “fabrics” that are cut and pieced on paper in a quilt block layout that becomes the reference for her painting. Noble finds this process endlessly engaging. This manner of constructing a painting weaves together the many threads of her creative journey.
