About the Artist
Contemporary landscape painter Maria Josenhans, creates paintings both outdoors on location and in her North Vancouver studio. Maria’s work rides the rail between representational and abstract as she allows each painting to find its own unique path. She believes there can be no substitute for what happens in response to direct observation and heavily relies on her outdoor “plein air” experiences to provide the creative impulse that informs all of her work. Her aim is not to have the viewer experience what she sees and feels, but to create a space that shares a tender tribute to the ordinary.
Illustrator, large format photographer, Highland dancer, teacher and world traveler, are all facets of Maria’s life that have shaped and influenced her career as a painter. She has been the recipient of numerous awards and grants, holds a BFA with Honours from the University of the Arts, Philadelphia, PA, and her work is currently represented by The Avenue Gallery, Victoria, BC.
