About the Artist

The West Vancouver Community Arts Council is a not-for-profit established in 1968 with the mission is to increase & broaden opportunities for the community to enjoy & participate in cultural activities; to deliver engaging arts programs; to foster interest in our diverse cultural heritage; including programming exhibitions in the Silk Purse Arts Centre. ‘Testimony’ explores themes of hope, displacement, isolation, perseverance & finding one's voice. Faria Firoz is a Bangladeshi-born artist whose expressive, symbolic paintings address the struggles of women who immigrate to Canada in abusive relationships, who must also navigate unfamiliar culture, language & customs to find their own power. Harem Jamal is a Kurdish artist from Iraq, whose childhood was spent in a refugee camp. His bold, realistic paintings explore the experiences of children displaced from their communities, surrounded by war, searching for a hopeful future.
