The use of a variety of materials is a characteristic of “atelier mitenand.” The materials are selected by the designer, Haruka Nakazawa, who grew up in a place rich in nature, culture and history in Japan. She worked on materials chemistry and was fascinated by the beauty that materials showed in her chemical experiments.
Then she attained BA in product design in the UK, shaping her design philosophy there. During her study, her design works were recognized in competitions organized by Designboom, Starpack and Smith of Derby, and then she worked for Isao Hosoe in Milan and Shin Azumi in London, who still influence her.
While living in charming European cities for 15 years, she immersed herself in the aesthetics and the quality of products there refined over a long time, such as architecture, products, cuisine and patisserie. Meanwhile, she realized that natural materials are an important factor which controls the quality of those human-made things, and it made her appreciate more the characteristics of each material.
Her creation aim is to bring out the charm of the materials and to resonate it with that of the wearers.
Now she is based in North Vancouver and calmly makes her craft pieces surrounded by trees.
