Erik Vaartnou creates abstract artworks under the concept Art from Ideas. Inspiration for the colourful and complex paintings comes from his lived experience and almost anything that interests him. Past and current themes include: displaced people, global warming, covid, mathematical concepts and urban issues. The works feature crisp compositions and use shape, saturated colours and various media to create visual interest, movement and depth.

Erik is a Vancouver native and has been a West Vancouver resident for over 40 years. He studied at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, earning Fine Art and Painting Certificates. He also has Bachelor of Commerce and Master of Arts (Economics) degrees.

Erik is an Elected Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists (AFCA), Artist Member of the West Vancouver Community Arts Council, North Van Arts and North Shore Artists Guild. His artwork has been included in dozens of juried exhibitions in the Lower Mainland, primarily at the Federation Gallery and Harmony Arts Festival, and several publications. He has also provided paintings for North Van Arts’ Anonymous Art Sale. Erik is a member of the West Vancouver Public Art Advisory Committee and has acted as a juror for the Federation of Canadian Artists.
