Paola Gaona

Paola Gaona, was born in Phoenix Arizona in 1997 and learned this beautiful creation process from her mother Rosa Gaona, renown artisan in the community of Mata Ortiz Chihuahua. After moving from the United States to Mata Ortiz her mother fell in love with the beauty of this ceramics and started making them as a hobby with the help of a neighbor. The passion for this artwork slowly grew in Paola, watching her mother perfecting each design as the years went by will make her follow her steps.

After 15 years the Gaona family have been able to establish their name and workshop in this artisan community. Paola now specializes in these small pottery vases where she recreates the colors and patterns from the Paquime civilization. In these past years she has learned how to work with different types of clay expanding her catalogue where you can find different types of ceramics (red, black, white) that adapt to any environment.

Living in Mata Ortiz has given her the opportunity to learn from her fellow artisans and even from the pionner ceramist, Juan Quezada. These days you can find her working side by side with her mother’s on the main street of this colorful town in their workshop “El Taller de Rosa”.

“It is a pride to continue with this tradition that existed thousands of years ago and that is part of our culture, we want to share it with the world! Each of these pieces carry the love and wisdom that has been passed down from generation to generation.” -Paola Gaona
