In February 2020, while repairing from a period of occupational burn-out, Samantha Newton’s exploration in polymer clay jewellery came as a source of restorative self-care. Starting outside of her studio practice, the accessible nature of the polymer clay supported joyfulness and play, and the brand Monday evolved out of this period of creative exploration and production.
When building each polymer clay slab, Samantha’s approach is to extract the most compelling and aesthetic areas for each set of earrings. This results in creating a limited series of unique pieces that provide the wearer with the pleasure of one-of-a-kind, individual artworks. The spirit behind Monday is to bring joy to the Monday – Friday routine through creative expression.
Working with polymer clay, Samantha pulls from her background in ceramics and painting through construction and form replication, as well colour mixing, blending, and layering. Her patterns are inspired by fashion and textiles, as well as natural landscapes around British Columbia.
Samantha received her Diploma in Studio Art at Capilano University, her Bachelor of Fine Art at Emily Carr University, and completed a Master of Arts Leadership at Queen’s University. When not making jewellery or painting in her studio practice, as an arts administrator, Samantha can usually be found behind a desk supporting artists through programming and development.
