Goldsmith | Private Silversmith and Sand Casting Lessons | Group Workshop Instructor

Sara Montgomery is based in North Vancouver and acknowledges the ancestral and unceded territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw the Squamish Nation, the Səl̓ílwətaʔɬ the Tsleil Waututh Nation and the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm the Musqueam Indian Band.

She creates fine and commissioned jewellery influenced by the ancient Silla, Etruscan and Pictish traditions. Her work also includes modern articulated hollow forms and the use of alternative materials.

Sara offers four learning formats:

Private Studio Lessons. One or two silversmiths in a professional studio setting. Suitable for beginners to advanced silversmiths. Lessons include sheet and wire fabrication, soldering confidence, cold connections, gem setting, torch and fuel safety, recycling metal scraps through ingot work and sand casting.

In Home Studio Instruction. North Vancouver and area. Support for setting up home studios with proper ventilation, particulate extraction and torch and fire safety that follow the BC Fire Code and local rules for small consumer fuel torches. Includes disability focused layout and tool adaptations. Tailored lessons available.

Online Lessons. Remote sessions for silversmiths across Canada and internationally for project support, tailored instruction and equipment or purchasing guidance. Ideal for ASL, Deaf, hard of hearing, ESL and non English speaking silversmiths.

Group Classes. Mountain Gems in Burnaby and other community locations.

Her teaching style is fun, supportive and adaptable. She encourages confidence through guided practice, problem solving and developing personal technique.

Sara welcomes silversmiths from all backgrounds. She is LGBTQ2S inclusive, an ASL user, disability aware and neurodivergent friendly. Her in person lessons are offered in wheelchair accessible spaces. Inuit, First Nations, newcomers and ESL learners are warmly welcome.
