Sonia Mocnik is inspired by her surroundings; from cityscapes to the great outdoors. Vancouver born, she has always enjoyed creating some type of art. She paints with the colours that move her from an urban scene to nature’s blooms. The energy of each captured moment comes back through brushing watercolour onto paper. Blooms become larger, chairs become vibrant, and people add a sense of mystery. She wants to convey a story and hopes the emotion felt by the viewer when they see her paintings will speak to them and their emotional state of mind. Sonia’s love of all things creative started early in school and continued into junior high where she had a wonderful art teacher. She has furthered her skills in painting through art instruction with the Federation of Canadian Artists Foundations Program, as well as other art workshops in Canada and in Mexico. Plein Air and urban sketching are some of her favorite activities. She has won awards at the Harmony Arts Festival, Gibsons’ Plein Air, Semiahmoo Art Center Paint the Town, as well as Paint Out Ajijic in Mexico. She is an Active Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, and a member in the following organizations: Hycroft Painters, the International Watercolour Society of Canada, North Van Arts, The Richmond Arts Coalition and the West Vancouver Community Arts Council. She instructs watercolour classes through the West Vancouver Community Center and other venues.
