Sue Damen

Mixed Media, Acrylic and Collograph

Sue Damen is an artist, illustrator and educator. She was born at Grace Hospital in Vancouver but grew up in the small farming community of Yarrow, BC. Later, she came back to Vancouver attending the University of British Columbia, where she graduated with a BFA specializing in printmaking and drawing, and a BEd in Fine Art and Media Education. Sue now lives close to the Vancouver seawall with her husband, and their home holds a rotating door for their three almost adult daughters as they come and go. Sue loves to share the process of making art – as an educator she provides opportunities for children to discover their creativity. Her work has been selected for various exhibitions at the Federation of Canadian Artists Gallery, CityScape Community Art Space, and Dundarave Print Gallery. She has exhibited paintings in Vancouver and Japan. Her artwork is in private and public collections throughout Canada and internationally.

Sue’s themes explore place and stories, unobtrusively offering respite upon a casual glance. Her style ranges from semi realistic to crafty. Her drawing shows through in the fine detail of her etchings and the gesture of her paintings. Elements of craft appear in the constructed paper and sewn patterns. She invites you to look beyond the real into the imagined place where life’s sentiments can be mulled about with a certain detachment.
